Not by a long shot.
History is littered with politicians whose conduct would make even the most hardened cynic wretch. Characters like him abound. Long before Nyesom Wike strutted onto the national stage, there was Alhaji Adedibu, the self‑styled “strong man” of Ibadan politics. He installed and deposed governors at will, demanding fealty that bordered on feudal homage. In Anambra, a governor was abducted, slapped, and shoved into a toilet by his supposed godfather for refusing to hand over the state treasury and IGR . That single act crippled the political careers of three brothers and sent a chilling message about the price of dissent to a mad greedy political godfather.
So, to label Wike as “sub‑human” is a convenient cop‑out that misses the point entirely: Wike is very much human. His run‑in with a Navy lieutenant proved he is a mortal who can be checked, not a mythic monster beyond accountability. He is one of us—only that his behaviour gives humanity a bad name. He makes politics look dirty, and that, in itself, is a direct threat to democracy.
Wike’s influence is a symptom of a deeper rot. He is a bad influence, and we must own that fact if we ever hope to do better. Denying this reality only guarantees that characters like him will continue to surface. Moreover, Wike is far from the worst of our public officers. Thousands of his enthusiastic supporters out‑shine him in sheer devotion, yet they remain in the shadows, living vicariously through his antics. You see them whenever they praise and dance with him—just as Lucifer has followers and Hitler had millions of admirers.
The real blame lies not with Wike alone but with those who enable him from Aso Rock in Abuja. They may think they are using him for their own ends, but they should watch their backs. When the next “regime‑change” crusade arrives—whether from a Trump‑style power broker or elsewhere—no tears will be shed for those who cheered Wike on. Karma, they say, has everyone’s address.
When Wike finally removes Governor Fubara as he has destroyed PDP, most of the enablers will still be around . The lesson is clear: the system that nurtures such figures must be confronted, not the individual alone. Only then can Nigeria hope to reclaim the integrity of its democracy. The world is watching and keeping tabs.
